What this job actually is
The automation engineers ship fast because the platform underneath them is good. You own that platform: the agent architecture, the evaluation harness, the shared tooling, the guardrails.
This is systems work with a short feedback loop. Anything you build is in a client build within days.
Responsibilities
- Design and maintain the internal agent framework and tool interfaces
- Build evaluation and regression checks so agent changes are measurable
- Own model routing, cost controls, and latency budgets
- Review automation engineers' work for reliability and security
- Keep the platform documented well enough that a new engineer ships in week one
Requirements
- Four or more years building production software
- Deep practical experience with LLM systems, retrieval, and tool calling
- Strong opinions about evaluation, backed by having built one
- Security literate: you think about credentials and data boundaries by default
